Disable MSN Instant Messenger

  • Go into: C:/Program Files/Messenger.
  • Rename the Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF"
  • This does not slow down Outlook, Outlook Express, Hotmail or hinder system performance.

Disable HTML Email in Outlook 2002

If any of you use Outlook 2002, there's a registry setting that will disable HTML mail, causing all incoming messages to be displayed as plain text.
  • Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Options\Mail]
  • Create a new DWORD Value and name it "READASPLAIN" (without the quotes)
  • Then set the value to 1

Turn off Windows XP's built-in support for ZIP files

Select Run from the Start Menu.
  • Select Run from the Start Menu.
  • Type regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll at the prompt, and click OK.
  • The change will take effect immediately, but you should restart Windows for all traces of the built-in ZIP support to disappear.
If, at any time, you wish to re-enable Windows XP's built-in ZIP support, just follow these steps:
  • Select Run from the Start Menu.
  • Type regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll at the prompt, and click OK.
  • The change will take effect immediately, but you should restart Windows for all features of the built-in ZIP support to be available.

Clicking AVI Files in Explorer casuing 100% CPU Usage

It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it will try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width, height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window). Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesn't contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage.

To solve this problem all you have to do is the following:
  • Open up regedit
  • Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
  • Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources.
